HJ's British Hairdressing Awards

The History Behind the Awards

In 1985, HJ's British Hairdressing Awards - presented by Hairdressers Journal International and sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional - were launched to recognise and reward hairdressers who were pushing the boundaries of hairdressing, creating and setting the trends for others to follow and excelling in this creative and competitive industry.

Each year hairdressers from all over the UK dedicate months of hard work preparing their entries with fifteen categories to choose from. There are nine regional categories covering all areas of the UK and six specialist categories that recognise the skills required in specific areas, including - Afro, Men’s, Newcomer, Artistic Team, Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year, and the Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year. Hairdressers from any salon in the UK can enter the awards and compete with the biggest names in the industry as the anonymous and independent judging process ensures complete fairness for all. Unlike other awards, HJ's British Hairdressing Awards are based on photographic entries that demonstrate the creativity, skills and talents of the entrant. All entries are judged by an impartial, distinguished, yet extensive panel of credible individuals and the results collated by an independent firm of auditors.

Schwarzkopf Professional celebrates the very best in hairdressing talent, as sponsor of the British Hairdressing Awards

A huge congratulations extends to all winners, particularly, our Schwarzkopf Professional salons who were crowned winners on the night, taking the awards for Scottish Hairdresser of the Year (Suzie McGill and Dylan Brittain, Rainbow Room International, Uddingston) and the prestigious Newcomer of the Year (William Lamb, Daniel Granger Hairdressing, Northampton). The highly acclaimed Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year was a fiercely competitive category and it was incredible to see such excellence in technical skill.

For those who didn’t have the chance to attend, here is a video to showcase the highlights from the night. Enjoy!

The Winners

The Grosvenor House Hotel, a JW Marriot Hotel in London’s Park Lane, was the setting for a glittering awards ceremony as the hairdressing elite gathered to see who would be announced as the winner of HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional.

Once a year the British Hairdressing Awards bring together the brightest stars of the hairdressing industry, celebrating the best of British across nine regional and six specialist categories, plus the coveted British Hairdresser of the Year.

In the 31 year history of the British Hairdressing Awards there has only been 16 hairdressers awarded the most prestigious title of any hairdressing career, British Hairdresser of the Year, and now Darren Ambrose proudly shares the company of hairdressing icons and previous winners. He described his collection of beautiful imagery as, ‘a collection paying homage to strong iconic woman influenced by oil paintings on canvas using an amalgamation of colour techniques and couture.’

The winner of the Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year was Issie Churcher of HOB Salons, Camden, London.
